Indiana offers (but doesn't require) medical payments coverage. This coverage helps pay for your injuries and your passengers' injuries when you're in an accident, whether you cause it or not.

Unless you truly can't afford anything but a bare-bones policy, you should probably buy medical payments coverage. The coverage is typically cheap, so it won't add much to your monthly rate.

Medical care can be expensive even if you have health insurance, and any extra help to pay the bills is useful for most people. Plus, medical payments coverage on a car insurance policy doesn't have a deductible, which means it immediately starts paying for your medical bills.

Depending on where you live in Indiana, average full coverage car insurance rates can vary by as much as $100 per month.

Insurance is typically more expensive in places where accidents and auto theft are more common, especially in large cities. That's because people living in these areas are more likely to file a claim, which makes them more expensive to insure.

Car insurance rates have gone up by around 29% in Indiana over the last five years, which is less than the national average.

If you have a full coverage policy, that's an average increase of around $444 per year. That can still feel like a lot, even if it's less than average.

The bulk of these increases came in 2023 and 2024, when car insurance rates went up by 11% and 15%, respectively. But things are looking up for Indiana drivers, as rates are expected to go down in 2026 for the first time in five years.

Car insurance rate changes in Indiana

Indiana car insurance rate trends

Year
Rate change
20221.59%
202311.44%
202415.13%
20254.91%
2026-0.44%

Car insurance rate change data was compiled using RateWatch from S&P Global, which uses information from the National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC).

Farmers had the largest rate increases during this time period, at over 71%. On the other hand, Progressive actually lowered rates in Indiana by 1% between 2022 and 2026.

If your car insurance rates went up, there are a few things you can do to lower your insurance bill:

  1. Compare quotes from the cheapest companies in Indiana, including Travelers, Auto-Owners and Progressive.

The most expensive company for full coverage in Indiana, Farmers, costs twice as much as the cheapest company, Travelers. So you could save more than $1,500 per year just by switching insurance companies.

  2. Look for a company that offers lots of discounts you qualify for. Most companies offer discounts for bundling policies or signing up for automatic payments.

But you could get a discount with some companies for belonging to certain alumni or professional associations, driving a brand-new car or driving fewer miles. So it's worth searching for a company that has discounts tailored to you.

  3. Try a safe driving program. Many companies offer a discount if you let them track your driving habits using a mobile app or device that plugs into your car. If you practice safe driving habits, these discounts could really add up, with some companies offering up to 40% off your car insurance bill.

Just be careful about which program you sign up for, as some companies, like Progressive and Geico, will actually raise your rates if you have bad driving habits.

Factors that affect car insurance rates in Indiana

  • Age: 18-year-olds pay nearly three times more for car insurance than 30-year-olds in IN.
  • Coverage: Full coverage costs $108/mo more than a liability-only policy in IN.
  • Speeding: A speeding ticket can raise your rates by 22% in Indiana.
  • Accident: An at-fault accident could increase your payments by 46% in IN.
  • DUI: A DUI is a serious offense that could increase your insurance rates by 69% in IN.
  • Credit score: People with poor credit scores pay almost two times more for full coverage insurance in Indiana than those with good credit.
  • Location: Full coverage rates vary by up to $100/mo depending on where in IN you live.

Minimum car insurance requirements in Indiana

Indiana requires drivers to have a minimum amount of liability coverage to drive legally, sometimes written as

What's the best car insurance coverage for Indiana drivers?

Full coverage is the best choice for most people in Indiana.

That's because full coverage includes comprehensive and collision coverage, along with liability insurance.

  • Collision coverage pays for damage to your car after an accident, regardless of whose fault it is.
  • Comprehensive coverage pays for other types of damage to your car, including theft or storm damage.

Lenders typically require you to have full coverage car insurance if you have a car loan or lease. And it's a good idea for cars that are less than 8 years old or worth more than $5,000.

Minimum liability is the cheapest kind of auto insurance because it includes only coverage legally required by the state. In Indiana, minimum coverage insurance pays for injuries to others or damage to their property if you cause a crash.

But a minimum coverage policy won't pay for damage to your car. And the liability limits may not be high enough to cover the cost of an expensive wreck. For example, if you crash into a brand-new pickup truck on the highway, $25,000 may not be enough to fully cover the cost to fix or replace it.

Common insurance questions in Indiana

Is hitting a deer covered by car insurance in Indiana?

Hitting a deer is covered by car insurance if you have comprehensive coverage. This optional add-on is typically part of a full coverage policy, which is usually required if you have a car loan or lease.

There are more than 14,000 car accidents per year involving deer in Indiana, according to the Indiana DNR. So, it's a good idea to add comprehensive coverage to your policy, even if it's not required.

Does car insurance cover storm damage in Indiana?

Your car insurance will typically cover storm damage if you have comprehensive coverage. This coverage protects against damage caused by "acts of God," such as hail, tornadoes, floodwater or a falling tree branch.

Comprehensive coverage is especially important in Indiana, where severe storms and tornadoes can cause serious damage to your car.

Do college students need their own car insurance in Indiana?

College students can sometimes stay on their parents' policy. If you're attending a school like IU or Purdue but keep your car at home, you can usually stay on a parent’s policy and maybe even get an extra discount on your insurance. But if you have your car in Indiana full time, you may need an Indiana insurance policy. It's best to check with your insurance company to make sure you're properly covered before moving out of state for school.
