  • UnitedHealthcare's average rate for a Silver plan is $224 more per month than Kaiser Permanente's average rate for the same coverage.
  • You can probably get a cheaper rate with another company if you shop around and compare plans.
  • High rates can sometimes be justified if a company offers excellent service or outstanding coverage. But UnitedHealthcare's service is below average. Its coverage is good, but so is the coverage from other companies.

UnitedHealthcare plans and options

UnitedHealthcare sells several types of health insurance, including individual and family plans, group plans, short-term plans and Medicare coverage.

Individual and family health insurance

You can buy one of UnitedHealthcare's individual or family plans on the federal health insurance marketplace or your state's marketplace.

UnitedHealthcare isn't a good option if you want flexible health care.

UnitedHealthcare doesn't sell PPO plans on health insurance marketplaces. PPOs give you much more flexibility in your health care. You can go to any doctor, even one that's outside the network, and still have coverage. Plus, you can see a specialist without a referral.

But you can't get that flexibility with UnitedHealthcare. You can only buy an HMO or an EPO plan, both of which require you to use only in-network doctors if you want to have coverage. EPOs let you go to specialists without a referral, but only if the specialist is inside the network. HMOs require you to get a referral before seeing any specialist.

However, UnitedHealthcare has a large doctor network. More than 1.8 million doctors and over 5,600 hospitals accept UnitedHealthcare coverage. Even with an HMO or EPO plan, there's a pretty good chance you can find covered doctors near you.

UnitedHealthcare offers five different tiers of coverage:

However, you can only buy a Catastrophic plan from UnitedHealthcare in New York, and the company only sells Platinum plans in Massachusetts and New York.

UnitedHealthcare group insurance

UnitedHealthcare has health insurance options for both small and large businesses. Employers can offer just health insurance plans to their employees, or they can add on coverage for vision and dental care, accidents and critical illnesses.

You can't get a group plan from UnitedHealthcare unless you work for a job that offers it. If you can't get UHC coverage from work, you can shop for an individual or family plan on the marketplace.

Short-term health insurance

UnitedHealthcare is one of the best companies for short-term health insurance.

You can get several plans from UnitedHealthcare that cover medications. That's a major perk, because you don't always get prescription coverage with short-term health insurance.

UnitedHealthcare's short-term health insurance comes from Golden Rule Insurance Co. The plan options vary by state, but you'll be able to choose between different deductibles, copays and maximum benefit amounts.

Short-term plans don't give you the best coverage. You can usually get more coverage by choosing a plan from the marketplace. But coverage starts right away, and you can enroll any time during the year.

Dental, vision and more

UnitedHealthcare offers vision and dental plans, coverage for medical emergencies when you travel, hospital indemnity plans and coverage for critical illnesses.

These are called supplemental health insurance plans, and they help you round out your coverage.

UnitedHealthcare Medicare

Most Medicare plans from UnitedHealthcare are offered through its partnership with AARP. So even though AARP is on the plan name, the insurance is through UnitedHealthcare.

UnitedHealthcare's Medicare plans are usually a better deal than its health insurance plans. The company's Medicare options include:

Although these are all policies offered by UHC, your options will depend on where you live.

UnitedHealthcare Medicaid

In some states, UnitedHealthcare works with Medicaid to offer coverage. This means that if you get Medicaid, you might be able to pick UnitedHealthcare to manage your coverage.

Extra perks you get with UnitedHealthcare insurance

Like many health insurance companies, UnitedHealthcare offers some extra perks with its plans.

  • Health Perks Rewards gives you up to $250 in rewards if you complete health-related activities, like going to your primary care doctor.
  • One Pass Select lets you access free online fitness videos and get a discounted gym membership. The program also includes free grocery delivery.
  • Walgreens Smart Savings Discount gives you up to 20% off certain health products at Walgreens, including contact solution, dental floss, some baby products and smoking cessation products.

UHC offers free insulin and other drugs

To help make sure people can get the medications they need, UnitedHealthcare got rid of the cost for several lifesaving drugs, including insulin. Other drugs with a $0 cost include:

  • Epinephrine, for severe allergic reactions
  • Glucagon, for low blood sugar
  • Naloxone, for opioid overdoses
  • Albuterol, for severe asthma attacks

Customer reviews and complaints

UnitedHealthcare gets bad reviews of its health insurance plans.

UnitedHealthcare gets 80% more complaints about its health insurance plans than expected for a company its size, according to the National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC). That could mean people tend to have problems with UnitedHealthcare's coverage or service.

One of the biggest issues that UnitedHealthcare customers run into is the company refusing to pay for medical care. According to data from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS), UnitedHealthcare is one of the worst companies for denying claims.

What to do if your medical claims are denied by UnitedHealthcare

  • Be persistent: Start by calling UnitedHealthcare to find out what the issue is, and keep calling until you get the issue resolved.
  • Get your doctor involved: They can help you document that your treatment is necessary and that you've met your insurance plan's requirements for coverage.
  • File an appeal: Very few people file an appeal when a claim is denied, but after an internal appeal, about 30% to 49% of UHC's denials are reversed. If that doesn't work, you can file an external appeal where UHC's decision is reviewed by an outside panel.
  • Get other people involved: File a complaint with your state's department of insurance, contact your state insurance commissioner, talk to a lawyer about your legal options or call your attorney general's helpline.

What are the top customer complaints about UnitedHealthcare?

Poor customer service and claim denials are the top complaints about UnitedHealthcare on sites like Yelp, Reddit and Consumer Affairs.

  • Calling customer service was frustrating for many people.

It can take multiple calls to UnitedHealthcare to resolve an issue, said one Reddit user. Another said, "They never give you a straight answer. If you ask 10 of the associates the same question you'll get 10 different responses."

  • Many people say it's a struggle to get UHC to cover medical bills, even when their doctor said the treatment was "medically necessary."

Numerous Reddit users report issues getting UnitedHealthcare to pay for many types of health care, including life-threatening emergencies. One Reddit user reported going "back and forth for months over a $40k bill" after a car accident.

Online reviews of health insurance companies tend to be poor, and UnitedHealthcare's average rating on review sites ranges from 1 to 1.5 stars out of 5.

Methodology and sources

ValuePenguin used the CMS public use files (PUFs) to find average rates for different plan tiers, geographic locations and family sizes.

Rates are based on a 40-year-old with a Silver plan, unless otherwise noted. Rates for Bronze plans include regular and Expanded Bronze plans for 2024, 2025 and 2026, when the plans are available. Your costs and plan options will vary; plans aren't always available in all parts of a state or county.

Health insurance plan quality ratings are also from CMS. Affordable Care Act (ACA) ratings show how the company performs for medical care, member experience and plan administration. This 2026 plan quality data from CMS is based on data from last year.

Complaint data is from the National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC), using a weighted average based on each subsidiary's premiums. Claim denial info is from transparency data from CMS, which was released in 2023 about insurance plans offered in 2021.

Additional sources include the Better Business Bureau (BBB), Consumer Affairs, Reddit, Sitejabber and Trustpilot.
